The Hyde Amendment, contained in the federal government’s annual appropriations legislation for 45 years, prohibits federal funding of domestic abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. It is a bipartisan provision that has been part of the federal appropriations and has consistently received overwhelming broad public support. Now some members of Congress want to take away these laws that both Democrats and Republicans have supported for nearly half a century. Should efforts to eliminate the Hyde Amendment succeed, billions of taxpayer dollars could be used to pay for abortions.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is asking all Catholics and people of good will to sign a petition to let Congress know they support the Hyde Amendment and do not want tax dollars paying for abortions.
